Beaches - Bonanza of Beauty and Bliss | |||||
| |||||
Overview Continuedbefore the shoreline changes character as we enter the cove- filled Dolphin Coast at Zimbali exclusive residential-and-hotel resort. Salmon Bay is a popular surf spot and inflatable- boat launch site leading into the Dolphin Coast 'capital' - Ballito. This vibrant yet relaxed tourist magnet regularly hosts nationally- televised 'Beach Extravaganzas'...adding to its status as a premier domestic holiday destination. Clarke Bay and Willard Beach are both shark-netted and manned by full-time lifeguards, but for something different, wallow in one of Ballito's clean and well- maintained tidal pools that abound with small marine life. Scuba- diving and snorkelling opportunities are plentiful...along with mussel-clad rocks and crayfish crannies. An ideally- situated promenade lays out the beauty of Ballito in all its panoramic splendour within an easy stroll.
Shaka's Rock is the adjoining hamlet, with a lovely stretch of sand and tidal pool at Thompson's Bay flanked by picture- postcard rocky cliffs. This beach is a favourite ski-boat launch site and start of a Marine Trail that leads to High Rock, where King Shaka tested the mettle of his warriors by ordering them to leap into the ocean. A little further north is Salt Rock , a laid-back holiday haven with protected, manned beach, enormous tidal pool and beautiful off- shore reefs. Sheffield Beach offers magnificent long walks, sheltered coves and delightful rock pools...with abundant diving reefs off Christmas Bay. And don't forget why this nature's playground is called the 'Dolphin Coast' - about 200 Bottle- nosed ambassadors of the deep call this area home. They can be seen from any beach almost every day, and have taken kindly to our sensitive sea-borne excursions to meet them 'up close and personal'! Tinley Manor is a fledgeling
resort with breath-taking sea
views and a watersport-friendly lagoon abundant with bird
life. Deep-
sea fishing expeditions launch from north of the main
swimming beach.
Continuing north, Blythedale Beach
adjoins a small conservancy
that includes the bird-prolific Umvoti River mouth. The
beach itself
is safe for swimming and surfing, and is the nearest resort
to
historic reminders at KwaDukuza-Stanger
. Travel a few
kilometres further, and Zinkwazi
presents a wonderland of
endless beaches and the Zulu Kingdom's longest lagoon...all
in the
setting of a nature lover's dream.
